Luang Prabang to Nong Kiaw

Transit Guide: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw

“The best way to get there is to take a bus. It costs around 50,000 – 60,000 kip and takes between 3-4 hours to get there. The roads are pretty bumpy, so be ready for a rocky ride. If you get a window seat, you’ll see beautiful landscapes along the way, which will hopefully make up for how terrible the ride is.”

Lao Landscape: Boat Ride to Nong Khiaw

“Due to a severe shortage of space (or creative use of little space, depending on your point of view), there were no bathrooms on board. Around hour number four, an eerie silence descended upon our boat when thoughts turned from the beautiful scenery to one’s bladder. When the boat finally made a pit stop, the urgency and pending relief was palpable. We haven’t seen people move like that since the Black Friday release of the Cabbage Patch Kids.”

Getting to Nong Khiaw, the traveler’s elbow and armpit of beauty.

“After finally leaving Luang Prabang, that’s when it occurred to the driver to check his gas tank. Fuel levels were low, so we turned back to L.P. to go to the gas station …only to discover there was a power outage in town! Almost every fuel station was down, so station-to-station we drove, searching for an “Open” sign. I saw a lot of the outskirts of Luang Prabang (which wasn’t nearly as exciting as my bus ride back, when it made an emergency stop for a young couple on the way to a hospital with a newborn baby, struck ill and connected to an IV drip!)”

Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw by Bicycle – 145km

“The road 13 is pretty and a fantastic view is offered over a bridge, 32km in on your journey(Hatgna). At the crossing there is also the opportunity to eat and sleep with the last guesthouse for 60 km. We didn’t fancy the grotty guesthouse and even though the sun was setting, we fancied our chances by pushing on. After this junction the climb becomes harder and the road also starts to deteriorate.”
